Mythical Mermaid Party Ideas

Do you dream of a life under the sea? Are you looking to make a splash at your next birthday celebration? Then look no further than one of the trends making waves this year: a mermaid-themed party!

Decorating Your Grotto

A mermaid’s home wouldn’t be complete without a dash of magic and a seafoam color scheme. Think shades of teal with pops of magenta, lavender, and gold. Bubbles can be made from teal balloons, while shells, driftwood, netting, and sea sponges can all be transformed into mythical party decor with a little paint and pearlescent accents.

If you want to channel your inner Ariel, you can pick up dinglehoppers (forks) and candlesticks to create a one-of-a-kind candelabra. Scavenge through antique collections to find treasures untold–like gizmos (pocket watches) and whozits (wireframe glasses). We also spotted trinkets like steins, grandfather clocks, globes, books, lockets, treasure chests, sea glass bottles, and vases in Ariel’s grotto. Once your treasure trove is complete, you can spray paint them to make them the same color scheme or leave them as is to add a bit of character to the room.

Dinglehoppers and Sea Bark

Now that your grotto is decorated, you can move on to the best part of the sea: the food! clamshell cookies, mermaid bark, coral rock candy, candy fish, and mermaid tail Oreos make sweet snacks even King Triton would love. For hors-d’oeuvres, crab cake sandwiches, driftwood pretzel sticks, and mermaid munch can all be set out to enjoy throughout the party. Add a little sandy decoration by sprinkling brown sugar around the platters and trays and topping with edible pearls and gems.

Mermaid Ice Cream and Dinglehopper Cake Pops are fin-tastic additions to the dessert table. To serve the ice cream, you can print off these mermaid tail Joy waffle cone jackets to wrap around the ice cream cones. You can also dip sugar or gluten-free cones in candy melts to create a seafoam effect. Joy color cups come in under-the-sea colors–perfect for a scoop of ice cream or individual cake treats!

Sea Water is an easy punch to make. It combines one bottle of your kid’s favorite blue-colored drink and one bottle of lemonade. Together, they combine to give you a refreshing way to wash down the delicious food.

Mermaids and Mermen

Dressing up as a mermaid or merman is fairly easy. Scale prints, shades of teal, and full merperson costumes are available online and at many clothing retailers.

Sea royalty can’t be without their crowns, so be sure to make a few in advance or create a station for your noble guests to create their own with adult supervision. Sea wands and tridents are also easy to make, only requiring starfish, ribbon, and old Halloween decorations.

Once your mythical clothing is all set, you can add a little extra pizzazz by face painting mermaid scales with fishnet stockings or a simple, fairytale design.

Life is the Bubbles

No celebration under the sea is complete without bubbles and fun! We recommend you have bubbles on hand for your fellow merpeople to enjoy throughout the event. With a little adult help, guests can create their own ocean discovery bottle or decorate a treasure chest. These activities double as gifts for them to cherish in their own coves.

Fun twists on classic party games include pin-the-leg on the octopus, crab walk relay, fishbowl ping-pong toss, fishing for treats, under the sea limbo, sea life bingo, and mermaid tail sack races. All you need is to add your color scheme and decor to the games!
