JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for reviewing, revising, and implementing all activities necessary for the cleaning and sanitizing of production, packaging, dry storage areas, and production equipment daily in multiple food production facilities. With plant leadership the specialist ensures that all duties are performed in accordance with state and federal regulations, SQF, SSOP, FSMA, USDA, FDA, HACCP, and following all established customer, safety, and facility requirements. This role is located at our Hermitage Sugar Cone production facility but will advise on companywide sanitation practices at all five US manufacturing locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervise, plan and coordinate all aspects of the sanitation processes and activities associated with the cleaning and sanitizing of the food processing facility and equipment
• Assess the effectiveness of the facility and equipment cleaning activities, and perform regular inspections of essential sanitation functions; maintain all essential records for the Sanitation department and assigned area of responsibility
• Development, implementation and maintenance of a master sanitation schedule/program for all processing and packaging equipment and storage vessels in accordance with company and FDA standards
• Direct rigorous Food Safety and sanitary design assessments and lead the development of continuous improvement programs to achieve future state at all current and future manufacturing facilities
• Collaborate with Quality Assurance, Food Safety, and Operations leaders to develop short and long-term risk management plans for post-lethality areas in ready-to eat processing areas.
• Collaborate on auditing “Right to Run” criteria that ensures our kill step and critical post kill equipment are functioning as designed.
• Lead the training and performance of assigned staff; implement job-related training to eliminate food safety risks; manage employee performance, discipline, development and recourse planning
• Lead the activities of sanitation employees in accordance with work instructions, USDA guidelines and Company policy to ensure timely completion; adhere to protocols, policies and procedures to achieve and maintain food safety ratings, monitor progress and take action to achieve them
• Review and assess FDA and USDA Guidance and Industry Guidance for control of pathogens against plant practices
• Maintain policies, procedures, HACCP standards, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance
• Develop easy to understand content and deliver training for sanitation procedures
• Manage the facility’s sanitation validation program in conjunction with the QA Manager
• Work with QA to develop SSOPs & monitoring activities related to cleaning and sanitation
• Work with QA to direct corrective actions & investigations pertaining to Environmental Monitoring Program results and completes documentation
• Conduct internal plant audits with a high level of attention to detail to identify gaps, evaluate new food safety risks, drive root cause analysis, implement corrective and preventive action plans, and verify their effectiveness
• Participate and assist in 3rd party audits, including audit preparation and continual maintenance of sanitation policies, procedures, and related documentation
• Monitor environmental pathogen test results to develop trends and map results throughout facility
• Use the Kleanz software to maintain, update, and revise the Master Sanitation Schedule
• Work with management, purchasing, and vendors to evaluate and approve appropriate cleaning and sanitation chemicals for use within the facility
• Review and maintain proper storage and inventory procedures for cleaning and sanitation chemicals
• Monitor cleaning and sanitation chemicals concentration procedures in accordance with company and SQF requirements
• Assign and track work performed by sanitation personnel and utilize reporting functions
• Inspect and approve completion of all sanitation activities
• Monitoring site waste removal program
• Stay up to date on sanitation practices and requirements through third party trainings
• Drive continuous improvements
• Promote safety in the workplace; support and enforce the facility’s safety program and regulatory compliance in conjunction with the EHS program; hold direct staff accountable for compliance to safe work practices
• Understand and help enforce the following key requirements to produce safe food:
a. allergen control
b. identity preserved food control
c. dedication of equipment / personnel,
d. separation of functions between lines/raw and RTE (ready to eat) zones
• Support the Pest Control program

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Must be highly motivated, able to follow direction, and perform assigned work duties independently with minimal supervision
• Must be able to speak, listen, and effectively communicate with team members both verbally and in writing
• Must be able to work collaboratively with multiple departments and plant leadership
• Able to read, understand, and strictly follow written procedures for multiple controlled processes
• Able to compose policies and procedures pertaining to cleaning and sanitation
• Good understanding of and strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Policies (GMP)
• Able to identify areas that need attention and either address or report as necessary
• Able to prioritize and meet deadlines within specified time constraints
• Must be able to accurately take instructions and keep records
• This position involves regular bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting.
• Required to stand on their feet, walk and perform repetitive tasks up to 12 hours per day
• Able to kneel or squat on an occasional basis and climb stairs on a frequent basis
• Use hands to grip, pinch, handle, reach, or feel on a frequent basis
• Must be able to sit for prolonged periods with frequent repetitive hand motions for keyboard and mouse use and occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, and lifting/carrying of less than 15 pounds
• Adherence to the company attendance policy is required, including expectations of punctuality and limited unapproved absences.
• Must be able to travel as frequently as monthly for site visits

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in food science, Engineering, or related field (preferred)
• Experience working in a food processing environment required
• 5+ years of experience in food manufacturing sanitation in a supervisory role
• PCQI and HACCP certification required at start of employment or completed shortly after hire
• Solid knowledge of chemical use in the cleaning/sanitizing process
• Sound understanding of GMP’s, SQF, HACCP, OSHA, and USDA regulations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Proficient in authorizing MCS/MSS and SSOP’s programs
• Skilled with cleanings in an Allergen changeover environment a plus
• Excellent computer skills including proficiency in MS Office
• Completion of/or ability to complete advanced sanitation training required
