JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Quality Manager supports the Quality department (Western facility) to facilitate and maintain the food safety and quality programs in coordination with Production, Warehouse, Maintenance, and Sanitation department operations.  This position will work closely with the Quality Manager and various department personnel to ensure the facility is meeting the Joy Baking Group, regulatory, and customer requirements for food safety and quality standards in a food manufacturing environment.  The Assistant Quality Manager will coordinate and carry out microbiological laboratory operations and compliance.  This person will supervise Quality Technician personnel.  This position requires the commitment to gain a thorough understanding of company policies and procedures, and to support their application.  The Assistant Quality Manager role is primarily during Day turn; however, as a continuously operational facility, some collaboration with other departments and personnel may be necessary during off-shifts.

RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with the Quality Manager to develop, implement, and maintain facility food safety and quality programs
  • Assist with food safety/quality certification audits for regulatory agencies, customers, and GFSI requirements, including audit preparation and program review
  • Fulfill the role as a SQF Practitioner and PCQI in compliance with FDA Food Safety Modernization Act
  • Oversee microbiological laboratory operations: sample collection and testing, results evaluation, creating/issuing product COAs, instrument/equipment maintenance, materials inventory & ordering, conduct lab training, coordinate proficiency testing among qualified personnel, and maintain laboratory records
  • Manage sample submissions to 3rd party outside laboratories and review/entry of test results
  • Assist with the facility calibration program requirements, tracking, and recordkeeping
  • Organize and perform analytical and organoleptic tests on raw materials and finished products, and maintain sample retentions
  • Assist with food safety and quality trend analysis, SPC programs, generating and reviewing data reports with facility personnel
  • Conduct food safety and quality training for department and facility personnel, including new hires
  • Participate in and lead internal audits for food safety & quality throughout operations, personnel practices, and equipment use
  • Provide guidance for facility personnel on food safety and quality issues to maintain material and finished product standards
  • Conduct non-conformance investigations and complete CAPA reports
  • Review and maintain records and documents within Quality department operations
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives within the department and facility focused on food safety & quality
  • Other duties as assigned

ASSIGNMENT, REVIEW, & APPROVAL OF WORK:

  • Under the direction of the Quality Manager (Western Facility), activities are assigned and conducted according to company policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College or advanced degree in related field
  • Knowledgeable in food manufacturing principles and operations with regard to food safety and quality requirements
  • Knowledge of HACCP, GMP, FSMA, Food security, Food fraud, and other essential food safety programs
  • Laboratory experience, including fundamental laboratory techniques in sample collection and microbiological analysis
  • Exceptional people skills and ability to work with personnel in a variety of disciplines
  • Excellent communication skills to listen and speak effectively with team members and actively participate in team meetings
  • Leadership experience in managing or supervising personnel, as well as ability to follow direction and work independently
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to analyze / interpret technical information, mathematical concepts, and form conclusions
  • Computer proficient in MS office and experience with SPC software
  • Ability to work Full time, approximately 45-50 hours/week, primarily Day turn hours, with occasional standing, walking, lifting
